"Children must be able to learn, to achieve academic success and have the opportunity to go on to college no matter what their circumstances."
- Leslie Sanchez
Community and Education Advocate
Leslie has a personal commitment to addressing the challenges facing America’s Hispanic students. In 2001, Leslie was appointed by President George W. Bush as executive director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. Under her direction, the Initiative launched the “Yes I Can! / Yo Si Puedo” public education campaign, the first bilingual interactive effort to serve as a one-stop education shop for families.
The campaign produced educational toolkits for students in pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 and was credited with a 400-percent increase in Hispanic customers to the U.S. Department of Education's website. In this role, Leslie also spearheaded a grassroots network of 20,000 parents, educators and students and negotiated strategic partnerships between 30 Fortune 500 companies, grant-making foundations, government agencies and trade associations.
Today, Leslie continues to support these efforts through her own public advocacy, service and charitable giving. Her commitment to the community includes strong support for numerous local and national charities – including Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Hispanic College Fund, and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund – and service on the boards of Providence Health Foundation, supporting Providence Hospital, a 143-year-old healthcare center with a congressional charter signed by President Lincoln.
